I am a student at the University of Maine in Orono. I live in southern Maine and have a family that lives in Washington County in a lobstering community. Currently, I study economic policy at UMaine and research legislation with Maine Youth Action. As a result, I have been invested in the role of our environment in our economy. In the past, the importance of natural resources to our economy has made Maine a proactive advocate for clean energy. I believe this is why we strive to participate in a net zero solution.
Everyone I know — family, neighbors and peers — all have their investment in contributing to a sustainable future. LD 2077, An Act Regarding Customer Costs and the Environmental and Health Effects of Natural Gas would entail a serious inquiry into the future energy system of Maine that is already underway. Doing so would create institutional initiative for all the people trying to make a change. The language of the bill specifically eliminates the price manipulation of the gas industry, while promoting legislative research into sustainable infrastructure.
At the very least, me and my peers appreciate the momentum this bill offers to seek the possibility of a better future for Mainers and investing in the value of our state: to lead.
