The Lewiston City Council passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza at a council meeting Tuesday night.
The resolution follows the lead of dozens of municipalities across the country, including Portland.
Two councilors voted against the resolution, saying international affairs had no place in the council chambers.
But city councilors who voted in favor of the resolution said passing the resolution was important to voice the concern of Lewiston residents.
“I think that the concerns of the constituents and the residents and the voters and the citizens of Lewiston override that and in this case, I am willing to say I support this resolution if only because there has been such an outpouring of support for it,” Lewiston City Councilor David Chittim said.
A copy of the resolution will be sent to Maine’s congressional delegation as well as President Joe Biden and several members of his administration.
