Former Maine Gov. Joseph E. Brennan, a Democrat who held the Blaine House from 1979 to 1987, has died at the age of 89.
Brennan, a Portland native, had a long career in politics that also included time in the Legislature, as Maine’s attorney general and in the U.S. House of Representatives.
He also ran for a third non-consecutive term as governor in 1990, losing out to his successor, John “Jock” McKernan, who was seeking re-election.
Numerous Maine political figures, including U.S. Sen Susan Collins and Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, released statements remembering Brennan and his political service.
