I think the Bangor Daily News again does a disservice to its readers by assigning deeply inaccurate and misleading headlines to some of its news articles. “Razor thin vote moves Maine toward dumping Electoral College” headlined an article about the Maine House’ very close vote to progress the national popular vote (LD 1578) on toward passage.
No dumping of the Electoral College takes place with passage of this bill. The U.S. Constitution (Article II) gives states the sole authority to choose how electoral votes (part and parcel of the Electoral College) will be assigned. One way to assign is to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. How could the bill “dump” the Electoral College when the bill is all about how Maine’s Electoral College votes will be cast? The headline is inaccurate.
This BDN is a newspaper. Please do your job and present the news, and match headlines to the facts you are reporting. How about “Razor-thin vote moves Maine towards joining the national popular vote interstate compact.” Not sexy enough for you? You’re a newspaper. Act like it.
