Many thanks to the Maine House for their opposition to Gov. Janet Mills’ proposal to exempt the Sears Island sand dunes from coastal sand dune protection. It seems those pushing to use Sears Island for the wind port instead of the already industrialized and developed nearby Mack Point are trying to make it sound as though the wind port is a lost opportunity if Sears Island is not used.
The article in the Bangor Daily News on April 11 read, “Without this bill or similar language in another one, Goodman said the state ‘would lose a once-in-a-generation opportunity’ to create jobs, generate clean energy and ‘protect our environment and the health of Maine people from the ravages of climate change.’”
I think that simply is not true. Desecration of the beautiful place that is Sears is totally unnecessary, as Mack Point is 400 yards away and the owner wants the port to be located there. Seeing that the opposition to the governor’s bill was not strictly along party lines was very hopeful to those of us who want to save Sears Island.
Heartfelt thanks to those of both political parties who saw that exempting the dunes was a totally unacceptable action!
