One person has died due to a crash on the Maine Turnpike on Friday Morning.
The multi-vehicle crash happened on the southbound side of I-95 near mile marker 20, according to the Maine State Police. The initial crash was reported at around 8:41 a.m., according to spokesperson Shannon Moss.
The Maine Turnpike Authority had issued an alert around 8:47 a.m. for a motor vehicle crash, and by 9:48 a.m. reported that both southbound lanes were blocked.
An investigation shows that a black Toyota Prius, driven by 23-year-old Oguzhan Cildir of Brighton, Massachusetts, initially struck a silver Toyota Sienna minivan and a white Toyota Tacoma pickup. A person driving a gray Chevy Impala was also involved in the crash, being unable to avoid the pileup on the interstate.
The driver of the white Toyota pickup truck, 53-year-old Gloria Cascio of Albion, died at the scene of the crash. Vincent Cascio, a passenger in the vehicle, was transported via Lifeflight to Portland’s Maine Medical Center.
Troy Perrault, 51, who had been driving the Toyota minivan, received minor injuries in the crash.
Cildir, the driver of the Prius, was transported to Maine Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Chevy Impala was not injured.
Just before noon, the state police said traffic was backed up almost 10 miles from the scene, causing “significant delays.”
The state police said at 12:46 p.m. that both lanes had reopened and that traffic was no longer being diverted at exit 25 in Kennebunk.
An investigation into the circumstances of the crash is underway.
