Spurwink, one of Maine’s leading providers of behavioral health services, has reported that it’ll lay off 61 people in the Augusta area.
The nonprofit organization reported the layoffs to the Maine Department of Labor last week, as required by the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, or WARN Act.
Little other information was immediately available. Kristen Farnham, Spurwink’s Vice President of Legal Affairs and Advancement, declined to comment.
The organization reported the layoffs at 5 Leo Martin Dr. in Chelsea, a town that borders Augusta. According to local tax records, Spurwink has a school at that address. It also has some facilities nearby, at 31 Spurwink Dr., according to the organization’s website.
Spurwink expanded its Chelsea campus about seven years ago to create more classroom and living space for its residential-care and day students, the Kennebec Journal reported at the time.
Spurwink is among the top 50 biggest private employers in Maine, with between 501 and 1,000 workers, according to state records. Its website lists about 20 locations across central and southern Maine.
