A Wayne man will spend 33 months in prison for smuggling methamphetamine into the U.S. and lying to a federal investigator.
U.S. District Court Judge John Woodcock handed down the sentence to 25-year-old Victor Sousa in federal court in Bangor, the U.S. attorney’s office said Wednesday morning.
Sousa also will serve three years of supervised release.
In July 2019, Sousa crossed the border into Canada and returned just a few hours later. He was searched after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers observed him fidgeting with his pants, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
During the search, they found 93 pills containing a mixture of meth and caffeine. They weighed about 41 grams.
Sousa pleaded guilty to smuggling meth on Sept. 30, 2022.
While he was awaiting sentencing in November 2022, Sousa was questioned by a U.S. drug agent about two people in a narcotics investigation. Sousa denied knowing either despite having made multiple calls from jail to one of them with whom he had lived, and having been supplied drugs by the other, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
Sousa pleaded guilty to lying to a federal investigator on Dec. 5, 2023.
