Local journalists didn’t know they had to tell the story of why their work matters to communities until the mounting collapse of the industry made it clear that they must.
The Bangor Daily News just released this year’s impact report, which has become part of how we share our story. The report explores how BDN journalism has positively impacted Maine life in the last year.
If you’re wondering what I mean when I use the word, “impact,” I mean the many ways that local journalism affects the quality of life in a place. Impact is everything from policy change or a public official held accountable leaving office to reinforcing community ties. It’s “I learned about it in the BDN” in public testimony, and it’s a reader sharing how a story brought them personal meaning or inspired them to take action in their community.
Impact is what you do, every day, using what you learned in the Bangor Daily News.
For the next few weeks, we are asking for your support to help fund this work. This year, for the first time ever, the Bangor Daily News is able to accept tax-advantaged contributions thanks to the fiscal sponsorship of Eastern Maine Development Corporation.
Will you help us raise $30,000 this spring to support BDN reporting?
Every dollar raised goes directly to supporting journalism with impact. Investigative reporting is the most costly work we do, but it’s not the only kind of journalism that matters. Reporting that explains issues, describes solutions and reflects community values all lead to real impact — from the ability to have an informed conversation to the development of policies that improve lives.
Please consider a donation today in support of local journalism that makes a difference for Maine communities.
Thank you.
