A retired FBI agent from Unity wants to challenge U.S. Sen. Angus King in November.
Retired FBI agent Jason Cherry of Unity qualified for a ballot recently, according to the Portland Press Herald. He is the third challenger to come forward against King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats. King has not announced his reelection bid but is expected to after an 11-year stint in the Senate.
Cherry works as an attorney specializing in cybersecurity breaches, but he has yet to hold public office. His campaign platform is heavy on his support for congressional term limits and age limits, according to the Press Herald.
Cherry told the Portland Press Herald he’s concerned about the cognitive declines of politicians tasked with and expected to be serving the public.
He is the youngest candidate on the Senate ballot, 10 years the junior of Democrat David Costello and 13 years younger than Republican Demi Kouzounas. At 80 years old, King is the one of the oldest U.S. senators, according to the Press Herald.
Kouzounas of Saco and Costello of Brunswick announced their bids several months ago. Both candidates are running unopposed in their political party primaries. Kouzounas said that the U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, recruited and encouraged her to run against King, who expressed his disappointment about the revelation.
