Mainers in central Aroostook County are being warned of “ping pong ball” sized hail on Thursday during thunderstorms sweeping across the state.
The storm will vary in intensity, but will likely bring hail and wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour to the region, according to the Caribou office of the National Weather Service.
A severe thunderstorm warning is in place throughout the Caribou region, the Augusta region and Thorndike area, but is expected to expire by 3:30 p.m.
Hail can damage vehicles and buildings, as well as injure people and pets. Drivers are urged to exercise caution.
The storm system is also bringing torrential rain, which could lead to flash flooding.
A severe thunderstorm watch remains in place for most of the state until 7 p.m. this evening.
