A Standish man allegedly abandoned a 6-month-old kitten inside a sealed tote outside a high school last week.
Shane Wescott, 37, has been charged with animal cruelty, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Police were called to Bonny Eagle High School on Saco Road in Standish about 11 a.m. on May 18 after someone found the kitten inside a plastic tote with the cover on.
The kitten was alive but “cold and terrified.” She was later euthanized because of her previous “lack of care,” the sheriff’s office said.
“We remind everyone that should you or someone you know find themselves in a situation in which you are unable to care for an animal please contact your local Animal Control Officer or State Humane Agent, a shelter or local emergency services for help or guidance with your situation. Abandoning an animal is never the right option,” the sheriff’s office said.
Wescott was scheduled to appear in Bridgton District Court on the animal cruelty charge on July 16.
