Mainers and travelers alike are waiting to usher in the start of summer with the Memorial Day weekend, with millions expected on the Maine Turnpike over the next few days.
Weather conditions at the start of the weekend look favorable, while Monday could see unsettled weather. Here’s the latest weather forecast from the National Weather Service as of Friday afternoon.
Saturday
Heading into the start of the holiday weekend, the last dregs of rain will likely leave the state on Friday evening leading to a bright and sunny Saturday throughout most of the state.
Skies will be sunny with a high around 70 degrees across the north and central regions, with low relative humidity and an intermittent 20 mph north westerly breeze. Looking southward, temperatures could reach the low 70s, although some clouds are expected to move into York County in the evening.
That could prompt some scattered showers in southwestern Maine overnight Saturday, but rainfall totals will be less than a tenth of an inch.
Sunday
Northern and central Maine can expect to see a dry day on Sunday with highs in the low to mid 70s and partly cloudy skies. Light winds will move across the region, which could push some clouds into northern Piscataquis and Penobscot counties in the evening ahead of unsettled skies on Monday.
Looking along Maine’s coast, temperatures will be in the high 60s, while inland temperatures will likely reach the 70s. A 20 percent chance of rain is expected, with intermittent showers moving eastward through the afternoon.
The start of unsettled weather on Sunday night will set up for more substantial rainfall on Monday.
Monday
Monday marks the Memorial Day holiday, with numerous parades and ceremonies across the state. Rain showers are likely, hitting southwestern Maine through the midmorning and moving northeast toward The County through the evening.
Temperatures will be lower across the state, with inland highs reaching the high 60s in the northern and central region, and highs in the low 60s throughout Portland and southern Maine.
Mostly cloudy skies and a light breeze are expected on the holiday.
