A man working in a metal fabrication shop in Rockport died Friday afternoon after an explosion.
The man, 39-year-old Sean Rancourt, was welding on a diesel fuel tank around 2:50 p.m. when it exploded, according to the Maine State Police. Rancourt was working at Rockport Steel at 17 Rockville St.
Rescue workers treated Rancourt at the scene, but he ultimately died from the injuries he suffered in the explosion.
The state fire marshal’s office investigated the explosion. Rancourt’s body has been taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta for an autopsy.
Rockport steel does custom metal fabrication for structural work, artwork and other purposes, according to its website.
