An Owls Head man has been arrested in connection with the death of a toddler at the Thomaston Walmart last week.
Aziayh Scott, 23, has been charged with manslaughter, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Police went to the Thomaston Walmart about 7:26 p.m. on May 29 after learning that a toddler was unresponsive and not breathing in the parking lot. Quayshawn Wilson, who was 22 months old, was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center, where the toddler died.
Police Chief Tim Hoppe told the Courier Gazette last week that the toddler reportedly had a pre-existing medical condition, and his parents were loading groceries into the car when they found him. The mother, a traveling nurse, tried to provide emergency medical care until first responders arrived.
The Maine medical examiner’s office later determined Wilson died of blunt force trauma and ruled the death a homicide.
Scott, who is from Louisiana, had moved to Maine and was living with his girlfriend in Owls Head, Moss said Wednesday.
When police went to the Owls Head residence, they found the couple had returned to Louisiana, according to Moss.
Scott was arrested Wednesday in New Orleans by Louisiana State Police. He was taken to the Orleans Parish Prison, where he is awaiting extradition to Maine.
