A man was fatally shot in Hiram by a Maine State Police trooper on Friday.
The Maine State Police were called to a Hiram residence Friday for a report of domestic violence, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss. When Trooper Zachary Fancy responded to the scene, he was reportedly met by a man who was pointing a firearm at him.
The circumstances that Fancy acted under are not clear at the time. However, he fired at the man, fatally wounding him. The man died at the scene. He is not being identified at this time, as officials notify his family.
The Maine attorney general’s office has opened an investigation into the use of deadly force, and the southern division of the Maine State Police Major Crimes unit has opened a criminal investigation.
Trooper Fancy has been placed on administrative leave, which is protocol following an officer-involved shooting in Maine.
Further information is not available at this time. Friday’s shooting is at least the third in which an officer has fired their weapon at a suspect, and is the second deadly shooting involving police in 2024.
A suspected robber was fatally shot by Brewer police in March after fleeing the Brewer Walmart. No body camera footage is available of the confrontation between Chief Jason Moffit and 39-year-old Barry Chick Jr.
