Saturday’s rainstorm has created havoc and a busy week for several high school softball teams in the state’s Northern division.
Tuesday’s regional championship game pairings in the South were all set but there were five semifinal games involving North teams that had to be played on Monday because they were washed out on Saturday.
So Monday’s winners will have to turn around and play their regional championship games on Tuesday.
Defending A North titleist Oxford Hills, 16-2 and the second seed, had already booked its ticket to the A North championship game where it will play the winner of Monday’s semifinal between No. 1 Skowhegan (16-1) and No. 5 Edward Little of Auburn (11-6).
The A North final will be held at the Central Maine Community College field in Auburn at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Both B North semifinal games had to be rescheduled for Monday with top seed and defending champ Nokomis of Newport (15-2) hosting No. 4 Hermon (11-6) and No. 2 Old Town (13-4) entertaining No. 3 Ellsworth (14-3).
The winners will meet on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Coffin Field in Brewer.
The C North semifinals were also pushed to Monday with top seed and reigning champ Bucksport (16-1) hosting No. 4 Washington Academy (14-3) and No. 6 Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln (13-4) traveling to take on No. 2 Dexter (12-5).
The survivors will play on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at the University of Maine’s softball complex in Orono.
The game was moved from 6:30 to 4:30 because the Bucksport and Washington Academy baseball teams are vying in the C North final at 7 at Mahaney Diamond in Orono.
MPA assistant executive director Mike Bisson said the MPA wanted the fans from Bucksport and/or Washington Academy to be able to attend both games since one will be involved in both depending upon the outcome of Monday’s semifinal softball game.
Class D North was set with top seed Penobscot Valley of Howland (14-2) facing sixth seed Woodland (14-4) in the 4 p.m. final at Coffin Field.
In the South finals, all four defending state champs are playing for the chance to win another crown.
Top seed Windham is the reigning A state champ and will take an 18-0 record into its regional championship game against No. 2 Cheverus of Portland (17-1) at 7 p.m. at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham.
Windham dealt Cheverus is only loss, 3-1, in their regular season finale.
In B, No. 3 Freeport (16-2) will try to dethrone No. 1 York (18-0) at 7 at St. Joseph’s College in Standish.
In the 3:30 games, top seed Hall-Dale (16-2), which has won three states in a row, will face No. 3 Spruce Mountain of Jay (15-3) at USM and top seed and defending state titleist North Yarmouth Academy (17-1) will play No. 2 Buckfield (17-1) at St. Joseph’s College.
The state championship games on Saturday will have 12:30 contests in C at UMaine in Orono and B at the University of Southern Maine; a 1 p.m. Class A final at Central Maine Community College in Auburn and a 4 p.m. D game at USM.
