Mainers are deciding congressional and legislative primaries as well as a slate of local elections during Tuesday’s primary elections.
The highest-profile race is in the 2nd Congressional District, where state Reps. Austin Theriault of Fort Kent and Mike Soboleski of Phillips are vying for the Republican nomination to take on U.S. Rep. Jared Golden, a Democrat representing an area twice won by former President Donald Trump. There are also 17 contested legislative primaries across the state.
Theriault has Trump’s all-important endorsement and a 10-to-1 fundraising advantage on Soboleski, but his allies are closing the campaign with attacks on the Republican underdog. Meanwhile, it looks like low turnout will be one of the major factors shaping the result.
