More closures are coming to Broadway in Bangor this week.
Monday night’s temporary closure at Interstate 95 didn’t go ahead as planned. Instead, there will be closures spread out over the next few days, according to the city of Bangor.
Those closures will run from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday to Friday.
Northbound traffic will be diverted to Stillwater Avenue, where it will use the exit 186 onramp to get south on the interstate and rejoin Broadway on the other side of the overpass.
Southbound traffic will be diverted onto the southbound onramp off Broadway, where it will travel to exit 184 onto Union Street before being directed to Hammond Street and through downtown to State Street and back to Broadway.
While the Maine Department of Transportation expects the work to take just one night, the city of Bangor cautioned that a second night of work and therefore more detours could be needed.
It’s the latest step toward the eventual replacement of the aging bridge carrying I-95 traffic over Broadway. The 152-foot steel girder bridge, built in 1960, is crossed about 50,000 times daily and is in “poor condition,” transportation officials have told the Bangor Daily News.
In recent years other I-95 bridges in Bangor have been replaced, including the Ohio Street bridge in 2020 and the Union Street bridge in 2016.
