Joe Battenfeld’s June 1 opinion column about the Trump conviction completely disregards the facts. The trial was about withholding information from voters to prejudice the outcome of an election. Since free and fair elections are the bedrock of our democracy, this prosecution was fundamental to safeguarding our system of government. We can speculate about the district attorney’s motivations, but the prosecution had to prove the case in a court of law.
Donald Trump was convicted by a jury of his peers, a jury he and his attorneys played a role in selecting. He was convicted on all 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal vital information from voters.
As the New York Times editorial board stated, “….the rule of law binds everyone, even former presidents.”
