Unsettled weather is likely to continue through the rest of the week, bringing the potential for flash flooding during thunderstorm downpours on Wednesday afternoon.
Thunderstorms will be most likely north of Bangor, moving in on Wednesday afternoon. Skies will likely be overcast through most of the day, with intermittent rain showers bringing up to a quarter of an inch of rain.
Some scattered storms will move across southern and central Maine, but the majority of the rainfall will be concentrated at higher elevations, according to the National Weather Service.
Flash flooding, with precipitation amounts reaching up to 1.5 inches during storm downpours, is possible throughout Wednesday evening at high elevations and in northern Aroostook County.
Storms and cloudy skies will persist throughout the rest of the week, with a steady 30 to 40 percent chance of rain across the state on Thursday. Scattered showers Thursday will give way to an active storm system moving across the state on Friday.
Strong thunderstorms are expected to move through southern and central Maine starting Friday afternoon, with gusty winds reaching up to 25 miles per hour at times. However, the storm system will likely clear out as it moves northwest, with thunderstorms being downgraded to showers in northern Maine on Friday afternoon.
Moving into the weekend, so far the forecast remains clear. Temperatures are expected to be slightly lower than the average, with highs in the high 60s and low 70s on Saturday, and in the low 70s on Sunday with sunny skies.
