Four high school teams will be crowned champions of Maine on Saturday, the biggest day of the baseball season thus far.
Here’s who is playing for a gold glove, ordered by class.
Class A – No. 2 Messalonskee vs. No. 1 Scarborough, 1 p.m., Morton Field in Augusta
The Messalonskee Eagles (16-3) of Oakland have a shot at winning their first gold glove since 2012 on Saturday, at the same location they outlasted No. 4 Bangor 4-3 this past Tuesday for the North title.
The Red Storm (18-1) will try to win Class A South’s fifth consecutive state championship dating back to 2019, when Scarborough won its first baseball title in school history.
Class B – No. 6 Caribou vs. No. 2 Yarmouth, 4:30 p.m., USM in Gorham
The upstart Caribou Vikings (12-7) will try to keep their hot streak going on Saturday and win their first state title in school history. Caribou previously upset No. 1 Ellsworth on Tuesday, and reigning state champion No. 3 Old Town last week to win the North crown.
Representing B South is defending regional champion Yarmouth (15-4), who fell to Old Town 1-0 at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor last June. The Clippers last won a gold glove in 2017 — B North has won every state championship game since then.
Class C – No. 4 Bucksport vs. No. 2 Sacopee Valley, 1 p.m., UMaine, Orono
Saturday marks North champion Bucksport’s third straight appearance in the Class C state championship game, winning its first and only gold glove in school history in 2022.
Senior Gavyn Holyoke and the Golden Bucks (13-6) will face off with UMaine signee and Maine Gatorade Player of the Year Caleb Vacchiano’s South champion Sacopee Valley Hawks (15-4). The Cornish-based squad most recently won it all in Class C in 2016.
Class D – No. 2 Stearns vs. No. 1 St. Dominic’s, 1 p.m., USM in Gorham
The Stearns Minutemen (15-4) of Millinocket are coming off a wild victory over Woodland in the Class D North title game, walking it off in nine innings at 10:30 p.m. in Bangor.
Stearns has an opportunity to nip South champ St. Dominic’s (17-2) threepeat bid, and win its first state championship since 2000.
