Some Mainers were mistakenly sent multiple emergency texts from the state of Massachusetts on Tuesday afternoon saying 911 services were down statewide.
The state of Maine followed up quickly with its own Public Safety Alert saying to disregard the emergency alert: “This was sent by another state. Maine’s 911 system is fully operational.”
However, not everyone in Maine received the first alerts, and many were left puzzling over the later text correcting the error.
Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety said the original alerts may have only gone to T-Mobile customers.
AT&T, Verizon, UScellular and Spectrum customers reported to the Bangor Daily News that they did not receive the original text alerts.
Moss said the Federal Emergency Management Agency is investigating the incident.
