A manhunt in Bangor on Monday involving multiple state and local law enforcement agencies was triggered by a man trying to steal $35 in sports trading cards from a Walmart, according to police.
The Walmart Supercenter on Stillwater Avenue contacted police about a shoplifter at about 9:30 a.m. When confronted by staff at the store, the suspect, Lawrence Cyr of Bangor, allegedly left $35 worth of trading cards behind and fled the store, Bangor Police Sgt. Jason McAmbley said on Tuesday.
Officers from the Bangor Police Department, the Maine State Police with a police dog and the Maine Warden Service descended on the area. Cyr was found and arrested near Oriental Jade restaurant, McAmbley said. The restaurant is a little more than 1 mile south of Walmart.
McAmbley said the loss prevention staff at Walmart had been watching Cyr because they suspected he had shoplifted from Walmart stores in Bangor and Brewer multiple times before.
Cyr was treated for cuts and scratches from running through wooded areas and was brought to Penobscot County Jail and charged with theft by unauthorized taking, violating conditions of release and probation violation.
Cyr was also wanted on an outstanding felony warrant for probation violations for previous convictions, McAmbley said.
