Traffic is severely disrupted as chunks of concrete are removed after a man was killed during construction.
Railroad Avenue is closed for up to 30 minutes at a time Wednesday as crews work to remove large pieces of concrete after a retaining wall collapsed Tuesday, the town of Brownville said in a Facebook post.
Stephen Lane, 67, of Glenburn was working on the wall when it collapsed and killed him, the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office said.
Railroad Avenue is the only road in and out of Brownville Junction. Flaggers are directing traffic, with wait times varying, the town said. Pedestrians and cyclists should avoid the area.
Construction started this spring on Railroad Avenue at the underpass. The sidewalk and retaining wall are being replaced under the railroad bridge.
