I write to share my opinion on what the most noble and effective action President Joe Biden could take at this difficult time.
At my age, 92, I have some understanding of aging. He may still be fully cognitive at 81.
Because of the very hard time he had that evening [of the debate] when it was too plain to see, it’s clear the principal concern of the nation is that perhaps Biden’s cognitive competency has seriously declined.
My view is the most effective — and noble — thing he could do at this time would be to convene a thorough, competent appraisal by a small group of objective, non-aligned experts, to perform an evaluation of his cognitive status and to inform him privately of their findings. If he found them to be supportive of his competence he could choose to release the results publicly and thus gain far more credibility than any number of public campaign appearances or media interviews could produce.
If he found the results confirmed that there are serious deficiencies and he chose to announce that fact, I believe he would be found by the people of the nation and the world at this time — and very importantly, by history — as one of the most principled presidents because he made the choice himself what he should nobly do on behalf of the nation.
May good things come to him to balance these times of so much personal and private burdens and the stress of foreign affairs and domestic tragedies.
