Temperatures are expected to stay high on Tuesday, with significant humidity levels pushing the heat index in the Bangor area into the low 90s today.
Scattered showers will likely move through the area this afternoon, after a sunny and hot morning. The predicted high of 88 degrees will feel like 94 degrees, according to forecasters with the Caribou National Weather Station office.
After showers and calm winds move through the region this afternoon, thunderstorms could form overnight. Scattered thunderstorms will produce gusty winds and strong downpours, with the potential for flooding as storms persist on Wednesday and Thursday.
Looking toward central and northern Maine, highs on Tuesday range from 87 degrees in Millinocket, Houlton and Caribou, while temperatures over Katahdin will reach just 66 degrees.
Down East temperatures will be cooler than inland temperatures, with a high of 78 degrees in Machias and 75 in Eastport.
High temperatures will also scorch parts of southern Maine, with projected highs of 89 in Augusta, 91 in Auburn and 95 in Sanford. An extreme heat warning has been issued for the southwesternmost region of York County, according to the Gray NWS office.
Air conditions will remain humid through Thursday, as residual winds from Hurricane Beryl are carried by the jet stream toward western Maine. This will increase chances for lingering thunderstorms with moderate to high winds and significant rainfall through the end of the week.
High humidity can increase the possibility of heat exhaustion or even heat stroke. Taking frequent breaks if working outside, drinking plenty of water and staying in ventilated or shaded areas can help prevent heat-induced illness.
