The article in the July 3 edition of the BDN discussing the rat problem in Trenton offered some good information, but I wish one point had been emphasized more strongly. When looking for ways to control a rat population, I think it cannot be stressed enough that poison is not a responsible option! The article did point out that Flaco, the Central Park owl that perished recently, died partially because of rat poison. But it should have pointed out that rat poison kills more than rats. Of course it could kill anything that eats it, but it could also kill anything that eats the poisoned rat!
An eagle, a hawk, a vulture, a fox, even someone’s pet dog could die an agonizing death if they happen upon what they might look at as a handy snack or meal in the form of a dead rat, or even one that has not succumbed yet but is weakened to the point where it is easy prey.
Rats seem to be a problem in several towns these days and there will have to be some serious thought about how to eliminate them. But please — don’t do it with poison. The raptors and wild carnivores, and your neighbor’s dog all thank you!
