What are you going to do when the police call for you?
Well, if they’re hitting you up for money to “fix” a legal situation, then hang up.
That’s the message from the Bangor Police Department, which received two calls from people over the weekend who said someone claiming to be a sheriff’s deputy contacted them.
Bangor police spokesperson Sgt. Jason McAmbley said this alleged sheriff’s deputy claimed these people had missed court dates and had warrants for their arrests, a situation that could be resolved if they paid “fines” online.
McAmbley said that “no legitimate law enforcement representative” will demand that you pay a fine directly to them or their agency.
“The legal system is a firm believer in paperwork, especially receipts,” McAmbley said.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, you should hang up the phone and call your local court clerk or police department to find out if it’s a scam.
“And it always is,” McAmbley said.
