BLUE HILL — Join Native Gardens of Blue Hill for an event-filled morning of garden tours and mini-workshops on Saturday, July 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the NGBH 4-acre campus at Bagaduce Music, 49 South Street in Blue Hill. The event celebrates the 10th summer since the vision for a garden demonstrating the use of native plants was first discussed in 2015. The open house is a celebration of both the gardens that have been established since then and the passion and generosity of all who have contributed time, expertise and funds to build NGBH into a vibrant community resource.
The depth of NGBH’s mission and reach is reflected in the stellar line-up of mini-workshops offered by local experts channeling their own passions and skills for an ecological gardening audience. The schedule includes Potting Up Seedlings with Molly DellaRoman of 5 Star Nursery; Variable Movement for Gardeners with Dan Waterman of Variable Movement; Bonsai with Natives with NGBH Board member Greg Mekras; Nature Journaling with author Kim Ridley; Macro Photography with nature photographer Gary Harmatz; native plant-infused tea tasting with herbalist Torsten Magnus Peterson; and a children’s activity with Hilary Tobin of Island Meadow Arts.
Tours of the NGBH Gardens will be scheduled every half-hour, with each focused on a different aspect of the gardens, such as History of the Garden, Trails & Bridges, Ferns, Woody Plants, and Ornamental Grasses. Guest artist Kirsten Rickert will offer Ephemeral Nature Collage, an interactive installation respectfully drawing from the spiritual practice of Mandala s— a Sanskrit word meaning circle or pattern representing the infinite potential of the universe.
The open house is free and open to the public. NGBH will provide botanical iced teas for refreshment, and The Blue Chill will be on site selling popsicles. While some activities will be under a small tent, this is primarily an outdoor event, with Sunday, July 21 as a rain date.
