A TikTok user by the name of @avaluesavvylife posted two videos in the past week describing the six-day trip to Maine she and her husband took earlier this summer, and came to the realization that, for the same amount of money or less, they could have taken a European vacation instead.
The two videos, one of which has received more than 100,000 views on TikTok, break down all the costs the two paid to spend six nights in Maine, including lodging, food and beverage, flights, rental car, activities and shopping. In total, the user said their trip cost $7,730.09, with $5,546.66 paid out of pocket and $2,182.43 paid with credit card points.
By comparison, she said, their ten-day trip to Paris, Amsterdam and Belgium and their 11-day trip to Italy cost less than their trip to Maine, even accounting for overseas flights.
The couple divided their time between Portland, Lincolnville and Southwest Harbor, though they only mentioned one of their hotels by name: the Inn at Ocean’s Edge in Lincolnville, which bills itself as a luxury hotel. Lodging cost them a total of $2,828.80, or about $471 per night. They spent $1,926.61 cents on food and $381.99 cents on alcohol, for a total of $2,308.06 cents on food and beverage, which works out to about $383 per day on dining and drinking.
Mainers and tourists alike have noticed the precipitous rise in the cost of lodging and other travel expenses in Maine in more recent years, with 72.6 percent of nearly 200 BDN readers who responded to a survey earlier this week saying they stay in hotels in Maine less than they used to.
Despite the cost, the TikTok user said her Maine trip was “totally worth it.”
