The recent assassination attempt was of course horrific. But it’s ironic that the man who consistently stoked anger and plots revenge on individuals was himself a victim of the very violence I believe he has promoted for years.
This is, after all, the man who called veterans losers and suckers, used vulgar, dismissive language about any number of women, and called immigrants rapists and AIDS carriers, among countless other slurs against individuals and groups. Some have argued that all this is merely oratory, exaggerating for effect. But just as lies, repeated often enough, may begin to seem true, so repeated violent language makes violence seem normal.
Do we really want a hate-mongering bully who encourages our worst instincts — the kind of encouragement that led to the violent attack on our Capitol — leading our nation?
