A Bangor doctor has had his medical license suspended following allegations of sexual assault.
The medical license of Dr. Michael J. Gilmore was suspended May 9 after emergency action was taken, according to the Maine Board of Osteopathic Licensure. A complaint was made in late April, the board’s Executive Secretary Rachel MacArthur said.
Gilmore runs Maine Functional Medicine in Bangor. Calls and messages left at his office were not returned by time of publication.
After the board reviewed the complaint, it said Gilmore continuing to practice is an “immediate jeopardy to the health and physical safety of the public who might receive his medical services,” and it immediately suspended his license, according to his notice of suspension.
A young woman made the complaint. She said Gilmore, without medical reason, touched her genitals and breasts. It also said that he said he did the same to “young girls that are about your age,” the suspension notice said.
Maine Functional Medicine’s office is open for supplement sales, but it has adjusted hours because of Gilmore being “temporarily out of the office,” according to the voicemail message. The business will be closing soon, or “changing format,” according to its website. Gilmore opened the practice in 2011 and was first licensed in osteopathic medicine in Maine in 2003.
Gilmore is not allowed to see patients while his license is suspended, MacArthur said. He has had a hearing before the board and an adjudicatory hearing is scheduled for Aug. 29.
Family medicine is Gilmore’s “passion,” according to his practice’s website. He sees adult patients as a primary care physician by referral or for consults, and only sees children for consults, the website said.
No additional information about the allegations against Gilmore were available at the time of publication, MacArthur said.
The Bangor Police Department has “no information” about any criminal investigation into Gilmore, Sgt. Jason McAmbley said.
