Bangor City Councilor Dan Tremble says he wouldn’t bring young kids to the library because he’s heard of accounts of drug use in the bathroom and park. I agree if those accounts are true, that drug use shouldn’t be happening in public bathrooms or spaces. But, unfortunately, when you are in the grips of homelessness and substance use disorder, you don’t have a choice. You have no other place to use other than public spaces.
If he doesn’t want them using in public spaces, I implore him to give them a safe place to use their substance. These are what we call supervised use sites, which I proposed back in 2019. By not supporting supervised use sites, I think people support arresting them and putting them in jail and costing taxpayers more money.
