Maine has one of the longest borders with Canada of all the states in the nation, with 611 miles and 24 crossings. Mainers are no stranger to border issues, with recent incidents of undocumented crossing attempts and apprehensions here in Maine.
We need people in Washington, D.C., who take this issue seriously, not people who look to use it as a campaign wedge issue. Recently there was a bill to fund border protection that would have been the biggest upgrade in decades. But the politicians in D.C. who support Austin Theriault apparently decided that instead of fixing the border issues, they wanted the problems to persist so that they could campaign on it. In many cases, I believe House GOP members are responsible for the border crisis because they’d rather play politics than actually solve problems.
On the flip side, U.S. Rep. Jared Golden has been working collaboratively across the aisle to address the concerns of his constituents and countrymen. Golden has voted to adequately fund U.S. Customs and Border Protection to aid their recruitment and staffing in rural areas, supported extending Title 42 authorities that allow the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to expel migrants who enter the country illegally and voted for more than $78 billion in funding for Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
I think Golden is the strongest and most consistent person in this race when it comes to the border. We need to keep him in D.C.
