Wall Street Journal reported Evan Gershkovich will be released as part of a prisoner swap between the U.S. and Russia.
That exchange is supposed to happen Thursday, according to ABC News.
Gershkovich, a graduate of Maine’s Bowdoin College, was arrested in March 2023 for allegedly spying for the U.S. government. His arrest inflamed tensions between the two countries, already at a low because of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine a year earlier.
Former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan, who was arrested in 2018 on allegations of espionage, also is supposed to be released as part of the prisoner swap, ABC News reported.
