A downtown Belfast property that once was part of the Penobscot McCrum potato processing facility has been put on the market for $5 million, marking the next step in the redevelopment of the prime waterfront site.
An industrial freezer facility previously sat at the 1.46-acre parcel at 22 Front St., which is near the bottom of Main Street and overlooks the city’s harbor. But the freezer building was torn down last spring after another section of the potato processing facility was destroyed by fire in 2022.
The agency that listed the property, Megunticook Real Estate, could not immediately be reached for comment.
“The potential of this lot cannot be overstated,” its listing says. “It is a developer’s dream, with the potential to enrich Belfast’s future growth. Other large lots may also be available. Taxes to be determined after removal of building.”
The lot is currently subject to contract zoning, meaning that its developer must negotiate terms of how it will be used with the city. Since the demolition, it is now partly covered with grass and includes a driveway and 21 paved parking spaces.
Another Penobscot McCrum property at 28 Pierce St. is not currently listed for sale. A potato processing plant operated by the company at that site was destroyed by a fire in 2022. The company announced in 2023 that it would not reopen its facilities in Belfast and instead expand its operations in Aroostook County.
