Another dead humpback whale has been found off Maine’s coast.
The whale was spotted floating in the water about 2 miles off the coast of Wells on Friday morning, according to the Wells Police Department.
The humpback was drifting northwest, and the Wells harbor master’s office will be monitoring its movement over the next several days.
It’s at least the third dead humpback whale found off Maine’s coast this summer. In June, dead humpbacks were found floating near Cape Elizabeth and Harpswell. The Cape Elizabeth whale had drowned after becoming tangled in fishing gear, while the Harpswell whale was in an advanced state of decomposition, making a necropsy unlikely.
