The long-shuttered Lincoln Pulp and Tissue mill will be transformed into a clean energy battery storage center through a grant funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
A $147 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy will turn the old Lincoln mill into a multi-day energy storage system, Gov. Janet Mills, U.S. Sen. Susan Collins,U.S. Sen. Angus King and U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree announced Tuesday.
The project is the first of its kind in New England, and the largest long-duration energy storage project in the world, the release said.
“This investment will play an important role in revitalizing Lincoln, including the site of the former paper mill, providing new opportunities for rural Maine,” Mills said.
The mill closed in 2015.
