A Naples man has been arrested in a Portland shooting that left a woman dead and three other men wounded.
Aaron Karp, 47, was taken into custody Thursday at the Portland police station, where he surrendered after learning an arrest warrant was issued for him, according to Brad Nadeau, a spokesperson for the Portland Police Department.
The shooting happened about 8:45 p.m. on July 30 on Forest Avenue, near Morrill’s Corner.
Witnesses reported hearing as many as seven gunshots. Customers and staff at nearby Brass Rail Bar and Samuel’s Bar and Grill were unharmed, CBS affiliate WGME reported at the time.
The shooting left four people wounded, one of whom — 54-year-old Susan McHugh of Gray — succumbed to her injuries the next day. Her death has been ruled a homicide.
A 45-year-old man from New Hampshire was treated and released the night of the shooting, while a 48-year-old man from Yarmouth was hospitalized and recently released. One man — a 51-year-old from Gray — was released from the hospital this week, according to Nadeau.
The identities of the three men injured in the shooting haven’t been made public.
Nadeau said that no other arrests have been made, but the investigation into the shooting remains “very active.”
“This is just the beginning, as we will continue to work with the Office of the Maine Attorney General to build our case as we look for justice for Ms. McHugh,” Police Chief Mark Dubois said Friday morning.
To date, few details have been released about the shooting, which Dubois acknowledged earlier this week has caused some “anxiety” for the public. But he said that the decision to keep more details from the public isn’t “taken lightly.”
“As I’ve mentioned before, our top priority in every case is to make sure the individuals responsible are brought to justice. At times, this includes not providing details to the public that some may seem benign, but in the reality of the case, are very much not benign,” Dubois said.
Karp is being held without bail at the Cumberland County Jail.
