In the Bangor Daily News of Aug. 9, I read with alarm the column of Lucy Hochschartner’s regarding the offshore wind port proposed by the state. My wife and I, along with two state legislators, a representative of the Sierra Club and other interested persons, recently visited the Searsport facility of Sprague Energy for a presentation and tour of the location. My opinion was reinforced by that visit that Mack Point is a far better location for the wind port than is Sears Island. In fact, Sprague is currently handling hundreds of wind generator components, which are being hauled to Washington County for the wind farm in Columbia.
Apparently, Hochschartner is opposed to the state paying a lease fee for land to a private company but has no compunction about sacrificing the treasured natural resource of Sears Island. Don’t give me the argument that it’s only 100 acres. I think the entire nature of the island and access to it would be ruined.
