NORTHPORT — Bayside Arts presents The Lake Trio at the Bayside Community Hall, 813 Shore Road, on Friday, Aug. 23 at 7:30 p.m. The program is free.
Returning to Bayside for the third year running, musicians Philipp Elssner (violin), Ben Maxwell (cello), and Jacob Wang (piano) will perform a program of classical pieces with contemporary flair, featuring composers such as Astor Piazzolla, Dmitri Shostakovich, and more.
The trio members all met while in high school at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Philipp Elssner has recently been appointed as the new violinist of Maine’s celebrated DaPonte String Quartet, with whom he has been performing since June. Elssner is a resident of Bayside and is well known to Maine audiences for his performances there and around the state, and for his role as founder and artistic director of Belfast Chamber Music. He has also performed around the United States and Canada and at festivals including Encore Chamber Music, Bowdoin International Music Festival, and the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival.
Cellist Ben Maxwell currently holds positions at the Detroit Opera and the Ann Arbor Symphony. Ben graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music where he studied under Yeesun Kim of the Borromeo String Quartet. He received his master’s degree in cello performance from the University of Michigan in 2023. Maxwell was a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center for two years, where he performed with the Boston Symphony.
Pianist Jacob Wang has performed solo and chamber recitals in Michigan, North Carolina, Iowa, Maine, New York, Perugia (Italy), and throughout Germany. As a concerto soloist, Wang has appeared with Raleigh Symphony Orchestra, UNCSA Symphony Orchestra, Central Iowa Symphony, and the Fort Dodge Area Symphony. He has won prizes at the RSO, Haeberle, Huntoon, Ronald Sachs, and International Paderewski Competitions. He has recently been appointed as faculty member and Resident Musician at the Music Haven school in New Haven, Connecticut, where he will begin in August of this year.
