A man who had recently been admitted to Penobscot County Jail has died there, according to the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.
The man, who has not been identified, was found unresponsive in his housing unit at about 7:55 a.m. Wednesday. Staff on site and later the Bangor Fire Department performed live-saving efforts but the man did not regain consciousness and was later pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said.
Authorities believe the man died from a medical or health-related event, according to the sheriff’s office, who said they found no indications that he died as the result of a criminal or violent act. No other inmates were injured during the incident.
The Bangor Police Department will oversee the death investigation, and the Maine Department of Corrections will review procedures.
Police withheld the identity of the man because efforts to notify his family were ongoing.
