SKOWHEGAN — On Monday, Aug. 26 the Margaret Chase Smith Library invites everyone to Margaret Chase Smith Appreciation Day. The celebration will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided. Staff remarks will be given at 4:45 p.m. and will be followed by a gallery talk given by exhibiting artist Jerri Whitman.
This event is an opportunity to enjoy two temporary exhibitions currently on display at the MCS Library. The first, “Painting an Inclusive History: Maine Women in Politics,” is a portrait exhibition which features the work of Maine artist Jerri Whitman. Whitman is currently working to create a portrait of every woman from Maine who has been elected to the Maine Legislature, the U.S. House of Representatives, or the U.S. Senate. The first 26 of these portraits are featured in “Painting an Inclusive History”.
The second is a student exhibition entitled “Joshua Chamberlain’s Victory at Gettysburg: July 1-3, 1863” which was created by Sylvie Jensen, Penobscot Christian School. Jensen competed in the 2024 National History Day in Maine competition and received the Margaret Chase Smith Maine Exhibition Award. National History Day in Maine is a co-curricular academic program that fosters in-depth research and critical analysis skills for students in grades 6-12. This program is a collaborative effort between the MCS Library, the University of Maine, the Maine Masonic College, John Bapst Memorial High School, the University of Southern Maine, the University of Maine at Presque Isle, and the Maine Humanities Council.
The staff at the Margaret Chase Smith Library encourages all to attend Margaret Chase Smith Appreciation Day this year. Come celebrate the life and legacy of U.S. Sen. Smith and have the opportunity to congratulate Director David Richards on his retirement!
The MCS Library is open to the public Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and reservations are highly encouraged for visitors. To make a reservation, please call the MCS Library, 207- 474-7133.
