Neighbors in York have submitted a petition to put a referendum on the ballot that would stop Wiggly Bridge Distillery from expanding.
There are growing concerns about “whiskey fungus,” which feeds and grows off the fumes of alcohol.
The petition looks to create an ordinance requiring distilleries to be 400 feet from dwellings and within a lot of at least 25 acres.
A hearing is set for Aug. 26, and after that the York Select Board will have 45 days to determine when the petition will be on the ballot.
Neighbors argue the expansion would only make the spread of the fungus, which has already been found in several areas, worse.
