I am writing to express my deep concerns regarding the proposed wind turbine port on Sears Island. While I understand the need for renewable energy initiatives, I think the location of this project poses significant threats to the environment, wildlife and the community that cherishes this beautiful island.
Sears Island is a pristine natural habitat, home to a diverse range of marine life and wildlife, including the majestic bald eagles that nest here. The installation of wind turbines could disrupt these sensitive ecosystems, potentially endangering the very species that make this island unique. The potential impact on marine life, especially with the risk of collision and noise pollution, cannot be underestimated.
Furthermore, the natural beauty of the island’s coastline, which draws both tourists and locals, is at risk of being irrevocably altered. The visual and noise impacts of the turbines could mar the serene landscape, diminishing the island’s appeal as a destination for those seeking peace and natural beauty. This, in turn, could have adverse effects on the local economy, which relies heavily on tourism.
In light of these concerns, I urge Gov. Janet Mills to reconsider the location of this wind turbine project. There may be alternative sites that would allow us to pursue clean energy goals without sacrificing the environmental integrity and beauty of Sears Island. For example, Mack Point.
Thank you for sharing the voices of locals who’ve seemed to have been silenced.
