A live cannonball was turned into the Yarmouth Police Department on Monday.
The resident was turning in ammunition and among that was an old cannonball, according to the Yarmouth Police Department.
Officers became concerned while examining the munition, and a hazardous device unit from the Portland Police Department advised that the cannonball was possibly still live, Yarmouth police said Tuesday.
The Portland officers were accompanied by a member of the Maine State Police bomb squad, and the cannonball was rendered safe. Officers determined it had, in fact, been live and active, according to Yarmouth police.
“[We] would like to remind our citizens if they come across old military style munitions to leave them in place and notify the police department immediately,” Yarmouth police said.
