A painting by the Dutch artist Rembrandt has fetched nearly $1.2 million at auction after its discovery in a Camden attic.
The painting, “Portrait of a Girl,” features a young girl dressed in black and wearing a white cap and ruffled collar.
The oil painting has a label that attributes it to the artist Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn and notes it was loaned to the Philadelphia Museum of Art for an exhibition in 1970, according to Thomas Place Auction Galleries.
It was set in a hand-carved Dutch gold frame. Kaja Veilleux, appraiser, auctioneer and founder of Thomas Place Auction Galleries, told ABC affiliate WMTW that the painting was found during a routine house call in an attic among stacks of art.
The painting was sold for $1.175 million during the second day of Thomas Place Auction Galleries Summer Grandeur Sale on Aug. 24, according to its website.
Rembrandt is considered among Europe’s greatest visual artists.
