A man who ran a boat aground on Vinalhaven Wednesday morning was arrested for operating under the influence.
Maine Marine Patrol received a report at about 7 a.m. that a boat had run aground on Seal Ledge on the southwest side of the island in Penobscot Bay.
Officers arrived about an hour later and found the boat, the Holly and Abby, owned by Fox Island Lobster Co., lying on its side and taking in water, according to Maine Marine Patrol.
The officers found the suspected boat operator, Jared Larsen, 32, of Waldoboro, at the Rockland Fish Pier and brought him to Knox County Jail, where he was issued a summons for operating a watercraft under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to the marine patrol.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,000.
Roughly 80-100 gallons of diesel fuel were on board the vessel, according to the marine patrol. Efforts are now underway to keep it from leaking and to salvage the vessel.
