I am beyond disgusted and horrified after reading the Sept. 7-8 Bangor Daily News article, “Former worker at adult care home pleads guilty to abuse.”
This is one of the most disturbing accounts of abuse I have ever heard of! The fact that four employees at a group home were allegedly allowed to violate and torture a non-verbal man with severe intellectual disabilities for years, without anyone reporting this abuse, is almost more than I can tolerate. I am beyond sick for this man and his family. I cannot believe this perpetrator’s sentence wasn’t longer, with such depraved indifference, and there was another victim also allegedly violated, and who knows how many others, given these individuals’ apparent penchant for torturing and abusing!
As a mother of an adult son who has a brain injury and significant medical needs, a group home might have been something we would have to consider, as I age. After reading this article, I am beyond upset and frightened for the safety of my son and other people with disabilities so dependent and in need of support. How in the world did this happen? Where was the oversight and supervision? We talk about children under supervision with Department of Health and Human Services caseworkers, being killed by their parents, but here is an additional example of a licensed group home for disabled men who had the most egregious violations done to them, right under everyone’s noses, and again, apparently no one did anything.
I hope patient/legal advocates for these men and their families will file a substantial civil suit and get a tremendous amount of money to care for these men, in a healthy and supportive environment for the rest of their lives, after such horrific abuse. Send a severe message to the state for seemingly not supervising this group home! And keep these monsters away from others for as long as possible!
